Houlton is a service center community

Located in Northern Maine, the Town of Houlton is a service center community that offers full-time police and fire protection, municipal water and sewer, and one of the lowest electric rates in the region. Surrounded by the beauty of the North Maine landscape, Houlton also offers year-round recreational activities.

The community has a wide variety of health and wellness services, including a hospital-owned clinic. The Houlton Regional Hospital is home to the Houlton Regional Health Education Center (CCHE). The CCHE provides a variety of health education programs and seminars to the region. These include American Red Cross CPR classes, Childbirth Education, and various support groups.

In 1940, the U.S. Border Patrol established a station in Houlton. It was under the direction of District One in Newport, Vermont, and included 14 Patrol Inspectors. The station was located at 96 Calais Road. The Houlton Sector also operated sub-stations in Fryeburg, Madison, Machias, and Rangeley.
